Gummy smile treatment
Gummy smile treatment at Barstable Medical Clinic
A typical smile exposes approximately 1-2 millimetres of upper gum, whereas a ‘gummy smile’ often shows 3 or more millimetres of the pink gum tissues. Patients who have this often feel self conscious about smiling or reluctant to smile in photographs. However a gummy smile can be easily and effectively treated with Botox® injections.
What causes a gummy smile and how does Botox® work?
Although there can be other factors such as dentition or genetic predisposition, commonly a gummy smile is simply due to overactive muscles that help you to smile. This results in the top lip being pulled up too high, exposing the tops of the teeth and gum.
A quick, easy and non invasive way to treat this is using Botox® injections into particular muscles around the lip and nose to relax those overactive muscles just a small amount. This then prevents the smile muscle being too strong and drops the lip down subtly to prevent the tops of the teeth and gum being visible.
Between 2-4 injections only are required for this quick and simple procedure, with fantastic results for those that don’t like the appearance of their gummy smile. Results can be seen within 1-2 weeks and last for approx 10-16 weeks. Please check out our FAQs for more information about Botox®.
